The UK’s trade body for the physical activity sector, ukactive, has awarded City St George’s with The Active Standard. The certification demonstrates the quality and accessibility of sports and fitness facilities at CitySport.
Boasting one of the largest indoor halls in central London, CitySport is the Clerkenwell and Moorgate venue for sport at the University. It provides fitness, wellbeing and sporting opportunities for City St George's students, staff and alumni, as well as students from other universities, local residents and corporate organisations.
CitySport achieved certification in ukactive’s first wave of assessment, making City St George’s one of the first organisations – and the second university – to be recognised nationally.
The standard was designed by ukactive with support from leading standards professionals and organisations across the UK and Europe.
CitySport was assessed on its health and safety practices, professional standards, safeguarding procedures and data protection processes. Sport and Leisure passed all criteria and did not receive any advisories, showcasing its operational excellence.
On the University receiving this accreditation, Tom Edwards, Head of Sport and Leisure, said: “This award recognises the huge amount of work undertaken by Sport and Leisure staff over the past year to improve our operating standards and processes, all for the benefit of our users."
Huw Edwards, CEO of ukactive, said: “Demand for our nation’s fitness and leisure facilities is growing rapidly as more and more people across the UK prioritise physical activity for their health and wellbeing. The Active Standard will help more people to feel confident that they can enjoy all the benefits of being active in a safe and inclusive environment.”
The assessment was conducted by Right Directions, an independent third-party assessment body, against strict criteria. City St George’s will remain certified for three years before its re-assessment.
